I create intimate, non-representational spatial environments in oil paint, through colour, shape, structure and material relationships. Working improvisationally on various painting surfaces, I focus on the substance of colour and material relationships in painting to find spatial order through the experience of seeing. This includes listening, sensing, internal reflection, and the passage of time, measured through the direct experience of emerging formal relationships. Space is found and developed in this field of interactions, gradually forming a specific compositional logic in the painting that reflects different kinds of seeing and space. My work is informed by material experimentation in the studio and the natural, found, and built environment where I live. In conjunction with my studio practice, exploring perceptual experience in relation to time, space, the body, and patterns in nature has had a meaningful impact on the way I see and work.
